Gettin’ Higgsy Wit It: Higgs Boson Explained

We’ve discovered the Higgs boson, we think.

Things are still being confirmed, but if true, this is big. Really big. Don’t take my word for it though, particularly since I’m not actually a scientist, just an enthusiast with a sweet tooth for all things sciencey (not a technical term). If you’ve been paying attention to the news and want to know more about this Higgs thing, let me shed some light on it for you by letting other people do it for me.

1. What is CERN, LHC, and other initials you keep hearing about? Here is a video (pre-discovery) of rapping scientists trying to lay some knowledge on you.

2. Why is this Higgs boson discovery so important? Below is a video from MinutePhysics, which is, by the way, over three minutes long. This helps to explain the overall significance of the Higgs for the standard model of physics.

3) And what if you didn’t get it still? Try this next video. Go on. You know you want to—it has cartoons.
